Licentious Librarians.
Unbeknownst to many parents, our school libraries have often become purveyors of pornography. A committed group of local parents has been fighting this in the Redlands Unified School District and has kept me informed about their progress—or lack thereof. They submitted a complaint in accord with the Board Policy Manual to Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, Ken Wagner, regarding several books they found in our school libraries. Despite graphic depictions of sexual activity of all kinds, usually involving teenagers, the various review boards set up by the principals at the schools whose libraries contain this pornographic material have refused to remove the books. It used to be illegal to show material like this to children. Now, we buy it for them and place it in libraries where they can check it out for free—without the parents’ knowledge.
This must stop, and any officials who think this kind of material is appropriate in our middle and high school libraries need to be replaced.
