Redlands School Board Approves Pornography in School Libraries

When a group of concerned parents learned there are pornographic books in the libraries of the Redlands School District, they began the arduous task of getting them removed. It took over a year, and only 3 of the 9 books challenged were removed from the shelves of middle school libraries. Once a book is challenged, the principal of the school library involved appoints members of the faculty and staff to review the book. If they decide to keep the book, those filing the complaint may appeal the decision, ultimately to the school board itself. At the meeting of March 12, 2024, the board considered the final appeal of these troubled parents.
The books in question contain all matter of disgusting material involving subjects like pedophilia, incest, rape, prostitution, and homosexual relations. And as disgusting as is this material, what is even worse is that there are public employees, who have been entrusted with caring for our children, who think it is acceptable to make this material available to children. A few years ago you could be arrested for providing this pornography to kids. Today, we pay librarians to seek it out and stock our library shelves with it; and we pay teachers and other administrators to deny the protests made by concerned parents.
The only action approved by the board on March 12 was to seek ways to speed up the extended review process. None of the pornographic books was removed. Board member Melissa Ayala-Quintero summed up the opinion of the board by saying that, “I trust our librarians.” Board member Jim O’Neil said, “I also trust our staff and librarians to know what books are allowed to be in our libraries.” These “staff and librarians” are the very people who spent tax-payer money to buy the books in the first place. Trusting them is a little like trusting Lucifer to do the right thing. Good luck with that.

It is apparent that the current board members of the Redlands Unified School District cannot be trusted to do the right thing by our children. The only way to fix this problem is to replace the members of the board with others who will protect our children and honor the wishes of a vast majority of their parents. We will have a chance to do this at the general election on November 5.
